First, what is a conchologist? According to Webster, it’s “a student of or a specialist in conchology; one who collects shells.” See—you may already be a conchologist and didn’t even know it!
Suncoast Conchologists is an educational organization dedicated to promoting interest and conservation in the study of sea shells and allied fauna. Well, that’s what we are...a shell club on Florida’s west coast bringing together people who share our common interest. You’ll meet beginners and experienced shellers alike, enjoy interesting and educational shell programs, and share in the camaraderie of field trips and informal educational evenings—a social time to learn more about shells.
Suncoast Conchologists meets the first Tuesday of the month at 7:00 PM except June, July, August, and December at Grace Lutheran Church, 1812 N Highland Ave. in Clearwater. Agendas include a short business meeting, a social time, and the featured program of the evening. “Mini-Box” shell displays and other special events add to the fun. Visitors are always welcome. Field trips to a variety of interesting locations are occasionally scheduled to areas easily accessible for day trips.
Our annual calendar includes two special get-togethers. In May, we end our club year with a picnic and in December, we celebrate the holidays at our “Holiday Shellabration.”
The Suncoast Conchologists library contains numerous books about shells and related subjects for members to use in shell identification or enjoyment of the hobby.
Our membership includes beachcombers as well as more experienced collectors. Annual dues are payable by September 30th. Membership includes an e-mail copy of our club newsletter, Suncoast Shorelines. Printed copies of the 5 yearly issues are available for an additional cost.
Won’t you come out of your shell and join us?
